According to PFT’s Mike Florio, 49ers TE Vernon Davis has been giving off mixed signals over the last couple of weeks regarding his intentions to report or not report to camp. Florio writes, “Most recently, he created the impression that, if he doesn’t get a new deal, he’ll show up for camp after skipping the offseason program. A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that, at the present time, Davis would not be reporting.”
SMITTY: We highly doubt Vernon Davis doesn’t show, as he could get fined $30,000 per day and he could lose some signing bonus cash. What a player says in the final week or so of their ‘attempted’ holdout can’t be take as absolute. Davis should have no problem whatsoever duplicating last year’s reception and yardage totals (52 receptions for 850 yards), although he should fall back down to earth in the touchdown department. Last year Davis pulled in 13TDs, but in the three seasons prior, he pulled in 7, 6 and 5 touchdown passes in those campaigns. With Michael Crabtree back to full-go (he didn’t play until Week 13 last year), and with the addition of Stevie Johnson, double-digit touchdowns for Davis is not a strong bet — Expect 6-8.
