2015 fantasy football player spotlights

Emmanuel Sanders

3/6/2015: Emmanuel Sanders is a risky sell, but also a risky hold. Why? Well, he is a risky sell because he still has low-end WR1 upside if things go right for him in DEN in 2015. That said, if Peyton Manning is on the decline, something… Read Spotlight

NEWS: Duron Carter signs with Colts.

SMITTY: Things will be official next month, but the often talked about son of Cris Carter is a fine dynasty grab if for whatever reason he is still available on waivers. He is 6-4, so he has great size, and of course great genes, but character issues had him undrafted in 2013, so he is no lock to make the roster in 2015. Grab him on pure spec, though, no question.

NEWS: Josh Gordon suspended for 1 year; not likely to win any sort of appeal.

SMITTY: What a waste of talent. This kid really doesn’t get it, and it’s pretty clear he never will. Reports all over suggest he tested positive for alcohol, a substance Josh Gordon is reportedly prohibited from consuming coming off his 2014 DUI. It was extremely clear that Gordon was to stay away from alcohol, among other things, so there isn’t likely any chance of winning an appeal, this is becoming very clear according to a grip of sources. His contract will be “tolled” through 2016, meaning he could be eligible for restricted free agency in 2017. Folks, this is if the guy can stay out of trouble between now and then, which at this point seems like an impossible task for the receiver. What a waste of talent.

NEWS: Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray, will DAL be able to sign both?

SMITTY: According to several reports, Jerry Jones admitted recently that it will be challenging to retain both DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant heading into 2015. Murray, who is no spring chicken given he turns 27 shortly, might not command as much off-season attention as he hopes. That said, it only takes one team to look past his age and injury history, and if you look at what he did last year, he deserves a ton more than the low-ball offers the Cowboys have been slinging in the runner’s direction. Expect Dallas to focus on signing Dez, then expect them to refocus their attention on retaining Murray after the running back tests the open market. In Dallas, Murray has top 1-5RB upside heading into 2015; however, if in another situation, he could drop a lot from that slotting, Dallas is that good of a situation. NEWS: Duron Carter, son of Cris Carter, says that the Vikings are his top choice?

SMITTY: This kid has a ton of talent, but he can’t sign with a team until next month. Don’t give up a ton trading for this kid – yet. However, he should be scooped up in all dynasty leagues due to his skill set and pedigree. Looking for Week 19 Fantasy Football Playoff Rankings?

NEWS: Aaron Rodgers and team not concerned over calf?

SMITTY: The team doesn’t appear to be worried about his calf, and neither are we. Expect him to be ready to rumble against the Cowboys in a Divisional battle. This should be a high-scoring event for all those Cowboys and Packers players. Looking for Week 19 Fantasy Football Playoff Rankings?

NEWS: AJ Green (concussion) ruled out for Sunday’s Wild Card Playoff game against IND.

SMITTY: He reportedly isn’t cleared via the league’s concussion protocol. Expect Mohamed Sanu to see increased opportunities in this one. For as long as Cincy can continue it, expect them to run, run, run with both Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard. Bernard becomes a big piece of that offense when they need to pass the football, so both are quality plays if we’re talking just Week 1 of the fantasy football playoffs. We fully expect to see a bunch of Andrew Luck to TY Hilton in this Wild Card battle. Looking for Week 18 Fantasy Football Playoff Rankings?

NEWS: AJ Green (concussion) not practicing Friday; doubtful for Wild Card game?

SECOND UPDATE: Updating the below report, AJ Green is now doubtful for Week 18’s Wild Card contest. Mohamed Sanu is a sneaky start in playoff leagues, and Jeremy Hill is a beast-of-a-start in leagues that allow for the resetting of lineups each round.

First UPDATE: This is going to come down to a game-time decision, so if you are thinking of starting AJ Green in any of your fantasy football playoff leagues, be sure to check all the way through to Sunday’s Wild Card kickoff against the Colts. Our guess is that he will play, but counting on him this far away from kickoff (for instance, setting your playoff line-up(s) now and never checking back) is not advised. Regardless, Jeremy Hill will be given a boatload of carries in this one – he is a fine RB1 in Week 1 of the 2015 fantasy football playoffs. Looking for Week 18 Fantasy Football Playoff Rankings?

NEWS: Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski to sit part of Week 17?

SMITTY: As we previously reported, Tom Brady could just play one half in this contest in Week 17, but that is speculation, of course. According to other sources, Rob Gronkowski may not play at all in Week 17, and if he does, he will play very little. While this isn’t coming from the team, nor will it, it’s safe to assume that the Patriots will take it easier with their starters in this game, yet another reason we advise against playing through Week 17. NEWS: Julian Edelman and LaGarrette Blount could sit Week 17?

SMITTY: For now, fantasy owners better plan to be without both players. Of course, we will have updates as we head into kickoff. Also note, Tom Brady could just play one half in this one, that’s coming from several sources, but all of course is speculation. This is the downside of playing through Week 17, something we advise against. Looking for Week 17 Power Rankings?
