NEWS: Emmanuel Sanders goes for 128 and 2TDs; Wes Welker suffers a concussion.

Broncos QB Peyton Manning completed 21-of-27 passes for 243 yards with 2TDs and 1INT during Saturday’s preseason game against the Texans; Montee Ball (appendectomy) rushed four times for 13 yards and caught four passes for 21 yards, Emmanuel Sanders pulled in five passes for 128 yards and 2TDs, Julius Thomas pulled in 32 yards on four receptions and Wes Welker suffered a concussion after pulling in four receptions for 42 yards.

SMITTY: Folks, we might just see fantasy WR2-type numbers out of Emmanuel Sanders this year, he is in that kind of position in Denver under Peyton Manning’s command (who should throw 40TDs with ease in 2014 if healthy). Now, don’t get crazy and draft him near fantasy WR2-type value, that’s just bad fantasy drafting, as it leaves no room for disappointment. But, if you can land Sanders as your fantasy WR3, you should be a happy camper in 2014! As we reported earlier, Montee Ball looked fully trusted by that Denver coaching staff, which is key to him having a monster 2014 fantasy football season. We will keep you updated on Wes Welker; hopefully he is back for in time for Week 1. Looking for Week 1 Power Rankings on all these guys?

NEWS: Montee Ball starts and touches ball five times in a row on first five plays.

In the Broncos preseason contest against the Texans, Montee Ball started and touches the ball five times in a row on the team’s first five plays of the game.

SMITTY: Not only does Montee Ball look healthy, he is clearly going to be the focal point of that Denver rushing attack, and screen game out of the backfield. While I still expect Peyton Manning to throw for 40+ touchdowns in 2014, the team is going to use Ball a ton, and if healthy, he could very well consistently dance with the top 1-5RBs all season long in 2014. NEWS: Montee Ball (appendectomy) to play in final preseason game?

According to CBSSports, Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendectomy) could see some action in the Broncos’ final preseason game. Ball actually did some 7-on-7 work with the first-team on Wednesday.

SMITTY: As Russ Bliss and I talk about in the radio segment below, I still love Montee Ball’s chances of being a top 5RB in 2014. Should you draft him that high, or trade for him at that value? No. His ADP has dipped into the 2.02-2.06 range — Use current ADPs and draft trending to your advantage! Looking for Full-Season Montee Ball Projections?

NEWS: Montee Ball could practice this week?

According to Troy Renck on Twitter, there is a definite possibility that Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendectomy) will practice at some point this week and he is reportedly making good progress.

SMITTY: Montee Ball has top 5-10RB upside even with his recent missed time. Is there a chanced he could be out of shape when Week 1 arrives? Sure. Is there a touch more injury risk when a player misses most of a preseason? Sure, but the good news is he could be back to practicing this week, and the risk gets minimized quite a bit if he gets a week or week and a half of practice in. Given Knowshon Moreno, who is half the back Ball is talent-wise, finished in most all league’s top 5RBs last year, Ball could fall more in the 2-5 range in 2014. Don’t draft him at that value, that’s not good drafting… instead, use his ADP to your advantage, and he is falling in the 2.02-2.05 range as of the last week or two. Looking for Week 1 Power Rankings?

NEWS: Montee Ball able to do jogging; Ball still a potential top 5RB entering 2014?

According to reports, Bronkos RB Montee Ball (appendix) was able to do some jogging during Thursdays practice.

SMITTY: Montee Ball may not play in the preseason, but we wouldn’t rule out a couple touches during the last preseason contest. Broncos coach John Fox has already gone on record saying he has confidence in Ball and does not need to see him play in the preseason to know what he can do, so unless there is a setback with his recovery, Ball remains a top 5RB candidate heading into 2014 (clearly pay less than that value given that you can). In fact, use this recent appendix situation to your advantage and draft him lower than usual in redraft, and trade for him a bit on the cheap in dynasty. NEWS: Ronnie Hillman scores as he fills in for Montee Ball (appendectomy).

With Montee Ball (appendectomy) resting through at least the first two preseason games, if not three, Ronnie Hillman took over as the team’s starter during the Broncos preseason opener; Hillman ran the ball six times for 15 yards and a touchdown, while pulling in one reception for five yards. CJ Anderson left the game with a concussion.

SMITTY: Ronnie Hillman just escaped a fumble on his touchdown run, as the ball came out as soon as he crossed the goal line (not a good start for Hillman even though it wasn’t ruled a fumble). Montee Ball could be back for the third preseason game, but even if he isn’t, he should have a decent shot at carrying the ball a couple times in the fourth contest. Even if he doesn’t do that, he remains locked into our top 5-10 running backs for 2014. If he suffers any kind of setback, we will surely adjust that expectation, but in that Denver attack, Ball is in for a huge, huge season. Checkout his Week 1 Power Ranking right here.

NEWS: Montee Ball recovering at home; Peyton Manning looks as sharp as ever?

According to rotoworld, Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendectomy) has been released from the hospital and is now at home recovering. And, according to ESPN, Peyton Manning has never looked sharper than he has in camp.

SMITTY: Clearly there is some risk with Montee Ball heading into Week 1, but honestly, I’m not too worried. Risk is always a part of the game, and while avoiding risk is always a smart play, the appendectomy isn’t something that worries me as far as Week 1 is concerned. Missing first-team reps and getting a touch out of shape, that’s what concerns me, but not enough to drop Ball outside of my top 12 overall (and that’s where I’d draft him, I actually rank him inside my top 5-10RBs for 2014). As for Peyton Manning, while many will knock the idea of selecting him in the first-round in 2014 fantasy football drafts, I have no issues with such a selection. He can win a league tossing for 45-50 scores. He may not repeat last year’s numbers, where he dropped an insane line of 5,477 yards, 55TDs and 10INTs, but I wouldn’t bet against him. He could easily drop 4,500-5,000 yards and 45-50TDs. There are a lot of great quarterbacks to draft in 2014, like 6th-round value grabs Tom Brady and Nick Foles (my favorite way to go) — still, there is nothing wrong with Manning in the first if you’re good at finding sleeper runners and receivers. NEWS: Montee Ball could miss entire preseason due to appendectomy; he is expected to be ready for Week 1.

According to Rotoworld, Broncos RB Montee Ball could miss the entire preseason due undergoing an appendectomy. The report suggests that ESPN’s Chris Mortensen believes the Broncos still haven’t ruled Ball out of all preseason action, though. “There’s still some hope Ball will be able to get out there for the end of preseason,” said Mortensen.

SMITTY: The good news is that Montee Ball appendectomies usually require about two weeks of recovery and 100 percent recovery is usually on par for the course in one month. It’s not exciting news if you’re a Montee Ball supporter, but it certainly isn’t going to have us adjusting his Week 1 Power Ranking or his 2014 Full-sason Projections — He remains a lock inside our top 5-10RBs heading into 2014 (with upside for more). If anything should change that projection, we will certainly let you know.
