Demaryius Thomas to decline in 2016?

If you own Demaryius Thomas in dynasty, it might be time to trade him. If you play in redraft, unless the price is right, it might be time to start avoiding him. DT use to be a second-round fantasy talent, and while it’s always possible he still cranks out that kind of production in 2016, he has a miserable QB situation in 2016 (Mark Sanchez, or overwhelmed rookie Paxton Lynch), he is 28 years old (turning 29 in December) and the team might plan to run more than ever in 2016. In dynasty, I wouldn’t suggest that anyone sell so low you are trading him in for a 6th- or 7th-round WR talent, but you might be able to get crafty and do a straight one-for-one swap for an underrated TY Hilton. Hilton is 26 and has a top 1-3 passer throwing him the football… this is the kind of ‘downgrade’ that seems feasible trade-wise, given the trade market values of both players, and it’s a great way to rebuild and plan for the future. And, in redraft, the two, Thomas and Hilton, have just about the exact ADP, so consider drafting a Hilton-type before you draft DT.

Note: The Draft Analyzer agrees with this doubting of DT, as it has the WR roughly ranked around 18-21 heading into 2016.

Other names to consider over Demaryius Thomas, regardless of position:

  • Jarvis Landry MIA
  • Jeremy Langford CHI RB
  • Andrew Luck IND QB
  • Aaron Rodgers GB QB

2015 fantasy football player spotlights

Ryan Tannehill

6/1/2015: Ryan Tannehill is a big-time sleeper even though many see his rise coming. Why? There are just so many solid fantasy football QBs, he can only climb fantasy football rankings so far, but he can outperform any ADP climb I can see taking place. He has 6-5 Jordan Cameron and… Read Spotlight

NEWS: Jace Amaro, Charles Clay inactive for Week 13 Monday Night Football.

SMITTY: The Jets declared TE Jace Amaro, RE Muhammad Wilkerson, QB Matt Simms, WR Walter Powell, CB Josh Thomas, OL Dakota Dozier, and OL Wesley Johnson inactive for Monday night’s Week 13 contest against MIA; Charles Clay (knee) is inactive for the Dolphins. If you were planning on starting Clay, be sure to quickly scoop up and start Dion Sims, who will start in his place. We expect big games out of Lamar Miller, Ryan Tannehill and Jarvis Landry. Landry could be a rising star, so look for him to progress down the stretch here in these final five games of the NFL season. As for those Jets players, only Percy Harvin has decent upside on a weekly basis, and that's only at a WR3 in larger leagues.

5. Jordan Matthews | PHI WR

Date: 7/24/14

This 2014 rookie receiving class is just flat-out phenomenal, as we are talking about the 4th receiver ranked, and this receiver can be a fantasy WR1 if he develops properly. Jordan Matthews is 6-3, 212 pounds, but he plays like he is 6-5, 225 pounds. He has a long reach and has phenomenal spacial awareness. View this exact play right here to see what I mean… if you watched that play, you should have noticed not only Matthews’ timing pulling in the reception, but his innate ability to use his body to defend the area around the football. It’s an instinct most players don’t develop until their second or third NFL season, but Matthews has a natural instinct to use his body to position the defender where he wants the defender. It’s masterful if you take the time to watch him in acton. Like Brandin Cooks, Matthews couldn’t have landed in a more potent offense. And, in Matthews’ case, the Eagles are in need of a big-time possession receiver, and it appears Chip Kelly is going to immediately lean on the rookie. Don’t be surprised if Matthews makes a strong case for Rookie of the Year in 2014! It wouldn’t be shocking if the guy pulled in 55-60 receptions for 900-1000 yards and 6-7 scores as a rookie. The rookie receiver position is changing, and these guys are maturing much faster than they use to.
