NEWS: Jonas Gray promoted from practice squad; could he crack the NE rotation?

SMITTY: This is a cloudy situation for sure, and just because Stevan Ridley is out for the year, that doesn’t make this situation easy to figure. Shane Vereen deserves double-digit carries moving forward now that Ridley is done, but will New England feed their best rusher carries? They are kind of known for doing the opposite of what you’d imagine at the running back position, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Jonas Gray, a power back from Notre Dame, somehow earned significant playing time. Granted, it won’t be surprising if he is a non-factor as well, but the point is, he deserves monitoring. Brandon Bolden is the logical choice for goal line work in Week 7. NEWS: Brandon Bolden a must-grab with Stevan Ridley (ACL) out for the year? Shane Vereen to see increased value?

SMITTY: It’s tough to predict how the Patriots will use their running backs moving forward, but with Stevan Ridley (ACL) done for the season, you have to think the team will start giving Vereen double-digit carries, something he surprisingly hasn’t yet seen this year. Brandon Bolden could either see a whole bunch more action, or he could just remain the goal line back — It’s really tough to predict this situation, so just grab Bolden in all formats just in case he starts to see starter-type carries. NEWS: Stevan Ridley out for the year with a torn ACL/MCL.

SMITTY: Update: Updating the report below, Stevan Ridley is done for the season with tears to both his ACL and MCL. Awful news.

SMITTY: It looks like it is a torn ACL, but we will likely know for sure soon, and this news wire and our Smart Alerts will let you know. Shane Vereen gets a significant bump in value with this news, while both Brandon Bolden and James White could somehow rise up from all this.

5. Jordan Matthews | PHI WR

Date: 7/24/14

This 2014 rookie receiving class is just flat-out phenomenal, as we are talking about the 4th receiver ranked, and this receiver can be a fantasy WR1 if he develops properly. Jordan Matthews is 6-3, 212 pounds, but he plays like he is 6-5, 225 pounds. He has a long reach and has phenomenal spacial awareness. View this exact play right here to see what I mean… if you watched that play, you should have noticed not only Matthews’ timing pulling in the reception, but his innate ability to use his body to defend the area around the football. It’s an instinct most players don’t develop until their second or third NFL season, but Matthews has a natural instinct to use his body to position the defender where he wants the defender. It’s masterful if you take the time to watch him in acton. Like Brandin Cooks, Matthews couldn’t have landed in a more potent offense. And, in Matthews’ case, the Eagles are in need of a big-time possession receiver, and it appears Chip Kelly is going to immediately lean on the rookie. Don’t be surprised if Matthews makes a strong case for Rookie of the Year in 2014! It wouldn’t be shocking if the guy pulled in 55-60 receptions for 900-1000 yards and 6-7 scores as a rookie. The rookie receiver position is changing, and these guys are maturing much faster than they use to.
