Week 5 Sunday Morning News Wire

smitty staff

Below is our running Sunday morning live Week 5 Breaking News Wire. Check back all morning long, and good luck in Week 5!

NEWS: Marshawn Lynch is out for Week 5.

FANTASY: Thomas Rawls will start and Fred Jackson will share carries with Rawls.

NEWS: Redskins WR DeSean Jackson and TE Jordan Reed are both inactive for Week 5 against the Falcons.

FANTASY: Not good for the Redskins. Get both out of lineups!

NEWS: Ravens WR Steve Smith Sr. (back) is inactive for Week 5 against the Browns; Lorenzo Taliaferro (foot) is also inactive for Week 5.

FANTASY: That Ravens’ passing attack could struggle to be consistent without Sr.

NEWS: NFL Network is reporting that Julio Jones (hamstring) will be active for Week 5 against Washington.

FANTASY: Of course, setbacks happen, so check back with us all morning long, but we are hearing like “he looks great” today, so get ready for a big Week 5.

NEWS: Bills RB Karlos Williams (concussion) will not play Week 5, and word is that the runner could miss another game.

FANTASY: Boobie Dixon will start Week 5, and it looks like he could start another game as well. Cierre Wood could also get a shot, so watch him. Stay tuned.

NEWS: Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring, calf) is not expected to play in Week 5.

FANTASY: The hope is Week 6. Jeffery has been one of this year’s biggest busts, given that we are now sitting through a 5th unexpected sit. Still, once back and fully ready to rumble, he should start playing like a fantasy WR1. So, if you have held him this long, don’t sell-low. If you don’t own him, try trading for him on the cheap, as his owner is probably extremely frustrated.

NEWS: Steelers Martavis Bryant (knee) is out for Week 5 against the Chargers.

FANTASY: He suffered some sort of knee injury in practice this week, so it looks like his comeback game will be in Week 6. Get him out of lineups!

NEWS: ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Julius Thomas (questionable, hand) will be active for Sunday’s Week 5 contest against the Bucs.

FANTASY: Be careful starting him this week, and monitor this news wire all day, as setbacks happen. Of course, he has talent and could play well if good to go, but it’s tough to say how much action he will see. He is a risky play this week, no question.

NEWS: Bills WR Sammy Watkins (questionable, calf) is unlikely to play in Week 5 against the Titans.

FANTASY: We still love Tyrod Taylor in this one, but get Watkins out of lineups this week. Of course, keep checking back with us in case something changes, but it seems like he is a no-go.

NEWS: Duron Carter signs with Colts.

SMITTY: Things will be official next month, but the often talked about son of Cris Carter is a fine dynasty grab if for whatever reason he is still available on waivers. He is 6-4, so he has great size, and of course great genes, but character issues had him undrafted in 2013, so he is no lock to make the roster in 2015. Grab him on pure spec, though, no question.

NEWS: Duron Carter, son of Cris Carter, says that the Vikings are his top choice?

SMITTY: This kid has a ton of talent, but he can’t sign with a team until next month. Don’t give up a ton trading for this kid – yet. However, he should be scooped up in all dynasty leagues due to his skill set and pedigree. Looking for Week 19 Fantasy Football Playoff Rankings?

NEWS: LeVeon Bell very questionable for SAT playoff battle; Steelers sign Ben Tate.

SMITTY: The signing of Ben Tate definitely shows concern by the Steelers, at least for this Saturday’s Wild Card outing. If Bell sits, Josh Harris will get starter carries, while Tate will likely just see a handful. Stay tuned. Looking for Week 18 Fantasy Football Playoff Rankings?

NEWS: LeVeon Bell (hyperextended knee) has avoided ligament damage, but remains questionable for Wild Card game.

SMITTY: He is considered ‘very’ questionable for this Saturday’s Wild Card game, but the MRI today confirmed that he suffered just a hyperextension, which is great news for his long-term health. Our early guess is that Bell won’t play, but anything can happen, so stay tuned. The Steelers will look to Josh Harris, out of Wake Forest, if Bell can’t go.

NEWS: Steven Jackson (quad) not expected to play Week 17; Devonta Freeman show scheduled for Week 17?

UPDATE: Recent reports suggest that Jacquizz Rodgers will start Week 17, but many believe that he will split the carries with Devonta Freeman. Keep in mind there is risk in starting either rusher, and the team could lean on the hot hand in Week 17. That said, everything we said below applies, as Freeman is a super sleeper of the future, but as this recent report suggests, the Falcons are very capable of mishandling the situation and wasting Freeman’s talents. Start either rusher at your own risk in Week 17, but we sure hope we see Freeman get his chance to get starter carries so that he can prove that he is a special talent that has been trapped in a situation where he has not been used properly. Looking for Week 17 Power Rankings?

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Devonta Freeman was one of our breakout candidates this year, and unfortunately, the Falcons failed to utilize his talents. This is a complete oversight on their part, and we are hoping Freeman gets enough work in Week 17 to prove us right. He is a dynamic rusher with tons of RB2 upside if given the carries. If you need a secret weapon of a flex in Week 17, this might be your guy. Be certain to check back on Steven Jackson’s status heading into Week 17, but if S-Jax sits, and if Atlanta is smart, they will unleash the player we had hoped to see all season long. Looking for Week 17 Power Rankings?

NEWS: Dwayne Allen trending to sit Week 17; Coby Fleener a sleeper start of the week at TE?

SMITTY: Nothing is official, but it’s looking like Dwayne Allen is trending to sit Week 17, which would make Coby Fleener a very solid TE play in Week 17. The thinking here is that the Colts will look to get Allen healthy for the playoff battle, and it’s logical. Stay tuned, this could certainly change, but even if he plays, he could play a little, so regardless Fleener is a nice play in a week where big name players aren’t necessarily a lock to produce. While on the topic of the Colts, TY Hilton is back at practice and looking more likely to play Week 17; however, he could play a little or a lot, that’s a risky thing to predict given the Colts will also want to rest Hilton for the playoffs. While he burned many fantasy owners last week (not his fault given how Luck played in Week 16), Donte Moncrief has strong fantasy WR3-type appeal heading into Week 17. Stay tuned on both of these guys! Looking for Week 17 Power Rankings?

NEWS: TY Hilton inactive for Week 16.

SMITTY: Donte Moncrief is a great start with Hilton out.

News: 12/21 – According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, DeMarco Murray is “going to play” Sunday despite his injured hand, which will be wrapped during the contest. The Cowboys are reportedly worried about his ability to pass protect, though, so there still is some risk that he could not play, or that he won’t play as much as most expect. Still, it’s hard to imagine sitting Murray, as almost any team starting 2RBs can find a way to make him that RB2 this week. Stay tuned in case anything changes between now and kickoff… if it does, Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar are solid last-minute replacements.
Take:

News: 12/21 – Peyton Manning (thigh) reportedly “looked good” during Saturday’s practice, and Emmanuel Sanders (flu) is expected to play Week 16.
Take: This was expected, but it’s always scaring having your stud QB banged up during Week 16 and knowing he plays Monday night when all other passers have played. Same goes for Sanders. Anything can happen, like Manning suffering a setback on game day during warm-ups, but both Manning and Sanders appear ready to rock on Monday night!

News: 12/21 – Falcons WR Julio Jones (strained oblique) is active for Week 16 against the Saints.
Take: You almost have to start Julio unless you have awesome alternatives. Just know there is risk in starting him, as it’s tough to predict if he will be on a major rep count, or if he will be mainly a decoy. Get on our forums if you have a dilemma!

News: 12/21 – Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph is inactive for Week 16.
Take: Chase Ford will take his place, but is not a recommended start given how many better TE options are likely available on waivers. Get on our forums if you have a dilemma relating to this situation!

News: 12/21 – Packers RB Eddie Lacy (eye) is active and ready for Week 16 against the TB.
Take: He had an eye issue, but it was never expected to keep him out of today’s game. He is a RB1 as usual, despite the fact that James Starks can vulture from time to time.

News: 12/21 – Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins (ankle) is active for Week 16 against the Ravens.
Take: Solid news, however, it’s always tough to know how productive a player will be in such a situation. Get on our forums if you have a start bench dilemma!

News: 12/21 – Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins (ankle) is active for Week 16 against the Ravens.
Take: Solid news, but it’s always tough to know if a player will be limited in such a situation. Get on our forums if you have a dilemma involving Hopkins.

News: 12/21 – Falcons WR Julio Jones (hip) is still listed as questionable for Week 16 despite participated in Saturday’s walkthrough.
Take: Things are pointing toward Julio playing, but clearly this is a game-time decision, as he will need to test the hip out in warm-ups. Stay glued to our news wire and smart alerts on this one! If he sits, Harry Douglas becomes a strong play, and since this is a morning game, fantasy owners should have time to react in solid fashion.

News: 12/21 – Patriots WR Julian Edelman (concussion) and RB LeGarrette Blount (shoulder) have both been ruled out of Week 16.
Take: Expect to see a touch more Danny Amendola than normal, but it will likely be Rob Gronkowski and Brandon LaFell (and even Shane Vereen) that get increased looks in Week 16. Jonas Gray might become a factor with Blount out, but New England is tough to trust when it comes to the running backs. Get Edelman out of your line-up if you have him in there!

News: 12/21 – Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (illness) is questionable for Week 16.
Take: It looks like just flu-like symptoms, so most expect him to play; however, with this game being on Monday night, be certain you have a back-up plan just in case you wait on Sanders and he ends up sitting. One solution would be to pick-up and stash Cody Latimer (only to use if Sanders did in fact sit). If you have a very solid alternative, like Martavis Bryant, get on our fantasy football forums and get some opinions! And, of course, utilize our Lineup Analyzer as well. Oh, and we also wanted to let you know that Peyton Manning (thigh) is questionable for Monday night as well, but most everyone on every news wire around is expecting him to play. Still, just monitor this situation (via this news wire and our smart alerts). As said above with Sanders, utilize our forums and Lineup Analyzer if you have a strong alternative under Manning. For now, we think he will play, but it’s always a risk waiting until Monday, as setbacks happen. Just know that and plan accordingly (without overthinking things).

News: 12/21 – Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) will start Week 16 against the Browns.
Take: He was cleared yesterday. While he has QB1 appeal, keep in mind he may not run as much.

News: 12/21 – ESPN’s Ed Werder is reporting that Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (hand, questionable) is expected to play Week 16 against the Colts.
Take: This is a tough call if you own Murray, as this is an afternoon game, but you could always grab Joseph Randle or Lance Dunbar now so that you have a last-minute alternative (and solid one at that) should this change directions last-minute. We expect him to play as of this early morning – We will post updates here and Smart Alert them out as info rolls in!

News: 12/21 – Colts WR TY Hilton is still looking very questionable for his late Sunday game, and he could be on the bad side of “questionable”. The Colts have already locked up the AFC South, so logic says if he is iffy at all, the team will sit him. However, anything can happen, so stay on both our news and Smart Alerts on this one. If he does sit, Donte Moncrief has all kinds of sneakiness to him heading into Week 16!!!
