Week 5 Sunday Morning News Wire

smitty staff

Below is our running Sunday morning live Week 5 Breaking News Wire. Check back all morning long, and good luck in Week 5!

NEWS: Marshawn Lynch is out for Week 5.

FANTASY: Thomas Rawls will start and Fred Jackson will share carries with Rawls.

NEWS: Redskins WR DeSean Jackson and TE Jordan Reed are both inactive for Week 5 against the Falcons.

FANTASY: Not good for the Redskins. Get both out of lineups!

NEWS: Ravens WR Steve Smith Sr. (back) is inactive for Week 5 against the Browns; Lorenzo Taliaferro (foot) is also inactive for Week 5.

FANTASY: That Ravens’ passing attack could struggle to be consistent without Sr.

NEWS: NFL Network is reporting that Julio Jones (hamstring) will be active for Week 5 against Washington.

FANTASY: Of course, setbacks happen, so check back with us all morning long, but we are hearing like “he looks great” today, so get ready for a big Week 5.

NEWS: Bills RB Karlos Williams (concussion) will not play Week 5, and word is that the runner could miss another game.

FANTASY: Boobie Dixon will start Week 5, and it looks like he could start another game as well. Cierre Wood could also get a shot, so watch him. Stay tuned.

NEWS: Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring, calf) is not expected to play in Week 5.

FANTASY: The hope is Week 6. Jeffery has been one of this year’s biggest busts, given that we are now sitting through a 5th unexpected sit. Still, once back and fully ready to rumble, he should start playing like a fantasy WR1. So, if you have held him this long, don’t sell-low. If you don’t own him, try trading for him on the cheap, as his owner is probably extremely frustrated.

NEWS: Steelers Martavis Bryant (knee) is out for Week 5 against the Chargers.

FANTASY: He suffered some sort of knee injury in practice this week, so it looks like his comeback game will be in Week 6. Get him out of lineups!

NEWS: ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Julius Thomas (questionable, hand) will be active for Sunday’s Week 5 contest against the Bucs.

FANTASY: Be careful starting him this week, and monitor this news wire all day, as setbacks happen. Of course, he has talent and could play well if good to go, but it’s tough to say how much action he will see. He is a risky play this week, no question.

NEWS: Bills WR Sammy Watkins (questionable, calf) is unlikely to play in Week 5 against the Titans.

FANTASY: We still love Tyrod Taylor in this one, but get Watkins out of lineups this week. Of course, keep checking back with us in case something changes, but it seems like he is a no-go.

Week 2: Live Sunday Breaking News

Below is a running live Breaking News report, which will be updated throughout the entire day on Sunday (Week 2). Have a great Sunday morning/afternoon everyone!

Breaking News: Week 2

NEWS: According to reports, Tony Romo has likely suffered a broken collarbone.
Fantasy: This will likely have the passer out for the season, or at least 8 weeks, depending on the severity of the injury. With Dez Bryant out potentially longer than 6-8 weeks, the Cowboys are in trouble. If you have some depth you may never use, consider making an offer for Dez so that you can stash him on your bench. While there is tons to worry about, him getting healthy, not having Romo, etc, he is still a great player to stash if you can get a low-risk deal done. Some looking to win now in dynasty might also sell-low on Dez, so take a stab there as well.

NEWS: According to reports, Carlos Hyde was cleared after being taken to the locker room with a possible Week 2 concussion.
Fantasy: It appears Hyde will be fine for Week 3 – for now. Be sure to stay glued to Smart Alerts and your logged in Starters homepage, as we will surely address any big injuries via a Player Spotlight.

NEWS: Matt Jones ran for 123 yards and 2TDs on 19 carries in Week 2. He also pulled in 3 receptions for 23 yards.
Fantasy: Beast! He wasn’t #13 on our 2015 Breakout Upside Board for nothing. Congrats to all who own this guy, especially in dynasty. He has some serious talent and clearly looks like the future of that Washington rushing attack. We will let you know what’s going on with Alfred Morris when we know more.

NEWS: According to reports, C.J. Spiller (knee) is in fact active for Week 2.
Fantasy: We knew this was going to be the case, but it’s now official. Again, he could be on a snap count this week, though, making Spiller more of a flex play. Low-end RB2-type value could be in the cards once Spiller is back to full-go.

NEWS: According to reports, Todd Gurley (knee) is inactive for Week 2.
Fantasy: He should be a go in Week 3, though, so get ready. Unless he suffers a setback, Tre Mason has decent flex value this week, but Benny Cunningham will still get reps.

NEWS: According to reports, Alshon Jeffery (hamstring, calf) is considered out for Week 2 against Arizona.
Fantasy: Both Eddie Royal and Marquess Wilson are solid starts this week. We predict at least one of them scores, and Wilson could be a very sneaky play. If you need a WR3 this year in deep leagues, run him out onto the field! Expect Martellus Bennett to have a big game in this one.

NEWS: According to reports, Mike Evans (hamstring) will play in Week 2 against the Saints.
Fantasy: He is questionable, so stay close to your Smart Alerts today… we consider him a low-end fantasy WR1, or at least high-end fantasy WR2 whenever on the field! He looks like a go!

NEWS: According to reports, Vontae Davis is expected to cover Brandon Marshall on Monday night.
Fantasy: Davis was the one that caused Sammy Watkins to go without a catch in Week 1. Don’t bench him for just decent options, but don’t expect a huge game out of Marshall this week.

NEWS: LeSean McCoy (hamstring) is expected to be active for Week 2 against New England.
Fantasy: Keep him in lineups unless he has a setback, which we will surely alert you to via Smart Alerts. Karlos Williams should be owned by all McCoy owners, though, just in case McCoy doesn’t come out of this week healthy.

NEWS: According to reports, C.J. Spiller (knee) is expected to play in Week 2 against Bucs.
Fantasy: He could be eased into this one, so curb expectations a bit. Great news, though, for future weeks!

NEWS: According to reports, Tre Mason (hamstring) is expected to play in Week 2 against Washington.
Fantasy: Benny Cunningham won’t just go away, but Mason is the better start. Gurley may or may not play a little in this one, but in a few weeks, it will surely be the Todd Gurley show. Get ready!

NEWS: Josh Gordon suspended for 1 year; not likely to win any sort of appeal.

SMITTY: What a waste of talent. This kid really doesn’t get it, and it’s pretty clear he never will. Reports all over suggest he tested positive for alcohol, a substance Josh Gordon is reportedly prohibited from consuming coming off his 2014 DUI. It was extremely clear that Gordon was to stay away from alcohol, among other things, so there isn’t likely any chance of winning an appeal, this is becoming very clear according to a grip of sources. His contract will be “tolled” through 2016, meaning he could be eligible for restricted free agency in 2017. Folks, this is if the guy can stay out of trouble between now and then, which at this point seems like an impossible task for the receiver. What a waste of talent.

NEWS: Chris Johnson arrested on a weapons charge on Friday night.

SMITTY: While this is a misdemeanor charge, don’t expect it to help his odds of remaining a Jet in 2015. Unless he lands in a very unique situation in 2015, his days as a starter in the NFL are over. We shall see if that “unique” situation becomes available. Looking for Week 19 Fantasy Football Playoff Rankings?

NEWS: Josh Gordon suspended for Week 17 by the Browns.

SMITTY: It looks like this was for violating team rules. He is on the suspended list due to failing to show up for the team’s Saturday walk-through. Expect the Browns to shop the ultra-talented receiver this off-season, as many expect that he won’t be in Cleveland in 2015. Looking for Week 17 Power Rankings?

This Week 15 Sunday News topic will be updated all Sunday long!!!

News: 12/14 – 49ers RB Carlos Hyde injured his back in Week 15.
Take: This looked like an LCL tear the way it went down. We will keep you posted, as Frank Gore is headed into the league’s concussion protocol for Week 16.

News: 12/14 – Giants RB Rashad Jennings injured his ankle again during Week 15.
Take: This isn’t good news, and we may just see Andre Williams alone in Week 15, which is great for his owners. Stay tuned for updates on Jennings, but we aren’t expecting much out of him next week, if he even plays.

News: 12/14 – Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) is officially active for Week 15 against OAK.
Take: Expect top 1-5RB numbers out of the stud this week. There were no real concerns he’d be limited or out with the ankle! Get ready for the Charles show as usual. Denarius Moore is out for OAK in this one.

News: 12/14 – Packers RB Eddie Lacy (hip) is active for Week 15 at BUF.
Take: He and James Starks are expected to split carries in this one, so the injury mixed with some shared workload makes Lacy a risky RB1 play, but you just can’t bench him if he is playing/starting. He can still have a 100 total yards and a score in a sharing situation in that GB offense.

News: 12/14 – Bengals WR Jermaine Gresham (toe) is inactive for Week 15 against CLE.
Take: Get him out of line-ups!

News: 12/14 – Ravens WR Torrey Smith (knee) is active for Week 15 against JAC.
Take: Just like we shouted out last week, Steve Smith Sr. is a strong play with Torrey still kinda banged up. It would be tough not to consider Torrey a WR3 this week, but we like Smith Sr. as at least that.

News: 12/14 – According to reports, Redskins WR DeSean Jackson (shin) is expected to play in Sunday’s Week 15 contest against NYG.
Take: He is a solid flex play, maybe even WR2 depending on your league size. We just updated the rankings and analyzers given he is a go, so refresh those and rethink your lineups if you need to.

News: 12/14 – Jets WR Percy Harvin (ankle) is expected to be a go for Week 15 against TEN.
Take: Check back last-minute on this one, but he appears to be a go. Still, he has flex play upside at best given the inconsistent QB play for the Jets. He is a shaky start here in Week 15 when it counts.

News: 12/14 – According to several reports, Falcons WR Julio Jones (hip) will not play in Sunday’s Week 15 game against PIT.
Take: Get him out of your lineups, but keep tabs on this through our News Wire and Smart Alerts. As we’ve said all week, Harry Douglas is a fine add and fine start with Julio out.

News: 12/14 – According to several reports, Texans WR Andre Johnson (concussion) will miss Week 15 against the IND.
Take: Get ready for the DeAndre Hopkins show. Arian Foster will likely get a boatload of production as well.

News: 12/14 – According to several reports, Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is “highly doubtful” to play in Week 15 against DEN.
Take: As we have said previously, Donald Brown is a legit plug-and-play this week as a flex.

News: 12/14 – Patriots WR Julian Edelman (thigh) will play Week 15 against MIA; Patriots RB Shane Vereen will also play Week 15; Brandon LaFell will also play Week 15.
Take: Edelman is a WR2/3 in most all formats. Vereen is a shaky flex play at best right now, but LaFell remains a sneaky-good flex/WR3.

News: 12/14 – Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is still very questionable for Week 15 and hasn’t practiced all week.
Take: Donald Brown will start in Mathews’ place if Mathews can’t go. Even if Mathews can play, he isn’t close to healthy, so Brown has some decent ‘desperation’ play to him this week. Stay tuned on Mathews, as we should have an update prior to kickoff!

News: 12/14 – Texans TE Garrett Graham (ankle) has been ruled out of Week 15.
Take: Get him out of your line-up if you are starting him this week. Need an alternative? Check out our Week 15 Power Rankings!

News: 12/14 – Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas (ankle) remains probable for Week 15.
Take: He practiced in full on Friday and is a top 2-4 fantasy WR this week, and is during any game he plays. Julius Thomas, who was active last week, but didn’t play, is probable and expected to return to action. Note, setbacks happen, even early on in the game, so there is risk in playing him, but all reports right now suggest he won’t be too limited in this one. Check back just before kickoff, though, as anything can change fast.

News: 12/14 – There is no update yet on Julio Jones (hip), but as we reported earlier, he could barely run yesterday and is expected, by many, to be a decoy in Week 15 (if he even plays).
Take: This can change, and change fast, so stay on top of both our News Wire and your Smart Alerts. Harry Douglas is a fine plug-and-play this week, make sure he isn’t sitting on waivers! Of course, Roddy White also sees an uptick in production with Julio out, but we actually like Douglas even more of the two (if Julio does sit). Check back with us on this one, anything can happen, good or bad, during warm-ups.

News: 12/14 – The Browns have released K Billy Cundiff (knee).
Take: Cundiff actually hurt his right knee in practice on Thursday, but was struggling anyway. Garrett Hartley will take over as the Browns kicker. Get rid of Cundiff if you have him. Obviously, Hartley is a solid pick-up if you need a kicker quick.

News: 12/14 – Bears K Robbie Gould (quad) is questionable for Week 15.
Take: Jay Feely will kick for the Bears in this one if Gould can’t go, so either pick up Feely and make a last-minute move, or grab a safer kicker.

News: 12/14 – Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry will likely be shadowed by Darrelle Revis in Week 15.
Take: While this isn’t fantastic news, and no one should be starting Landry as anything close to a WR2, he still has sneaky WR3 ability given how consistent he has been for the past six weeks. Here are his reception totals over than span: 5, 7, 5, 7, 8, 6. In PPR, that’s very solid, and even though he has been without a touchdown for two straight weeks, he had three in the two weeks prior. Again, he isn’t a great start given the coverage situation, but he isn’t a for sure ‘avoid’, it just depends on your situation (get on our forums to get advice!!!).

News: 12/14 – There is some speculation on news wires that there will be a 50-50 split in carries between Eddie Lacy (hip, probable) and James Starks in Week 15 against the Bills.
Take: As we reported earlier on this topic, Lacy all of the sudden becomes more of a RB2 play this week. He would be tough to bench unless your roster was just loaded at RB, but he isn’t locked into anything close to RB1 numbers if he is truly dialed in for just 50 percent of the action. If you have a dilemma, get on our forums and get some advice!

News: 12/14 – Vikings RB Adrian Peterson reportedly told ESPN that he has considered retirement. “I love playing football, don’t get me wrong, but this situation is deeper than that,” Peterson said. “For me, it’s like, Why should I continue to be a part of an organization or a business that handles players the way they do?”
Take: Some reports suggest that Peterson could look into running the 200- and 400-meter dashes in the Olympics.

News: 12/14 – 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (knee) has been ruled out of Week 15.
Take: Harry Douglas is a fine plug-and-play receiver this week if Julio Jones ends up sitting. Keep tabs on that situation if you need a receiver.

News: 12/14 – Broncos WR Cody Latimer (ribs) has been ruled out of Week 15.
Take: He shouldn’t be started, or even owned, in redraft leagues.

More Start Bench, Trade, Waiver Wire help to come!

NEWS: Adrian Peterson ruling in; AP will remain on exempt list.

SMITTY: Not good for those hoping Adrian Peterson would return to the field this season. Essentially what this means is that Roger Goodell, the league’s commissioner, is now in control of when he can remove Adrian Peterson from the exempt list, and even if Adrian Peterson wins his appeal, as the league suspended the runner for the remainder of the season already, Goodell has the power here. While anything can happen, so we will stay on this over the next week, it’s time to let go of the idea of AP playing in 2014. The values of both Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata both go up for the remainder of this season. Looking for Week 12 Power Rankings?

NEWS: Adrian Peterson suspended for year by NFL; AP appealing to play as soon as Week 12?

SMITTY: This is going to get even more complicated as we go, but essentially the NFL has suspended Adrian Peterson for at least the rest of the season, as Roger Goodell is not considering his recent absence as time served. However, Peterson is appealing the suspension, thus fighting for a chance to return to the field while fighting the appeal (returning as early as Week 12), but then the Vikings would have to allow him to play during this appeal. This is far from over, so Peterson is a hold for the moment despite the ‘suspension’ that was just handed down by the Commish. Looking for Week 12 Power Rankings?

NEWS: Adrian Peterson ruling on reinstatement expected Wednesday?

SMITTY: Adrian Peterson’s grievance hearing took place last Monday, and the rules state that a decision must be reached by November 22nd. Word is that we should know Wednesday, though, and the runner has a strong shot at playing in Week 12. Much can happen between now and then, though, so stay tuned on this one via both this News Wire and our Smart Alerts. Also, see where he ranks on our Week 12 Power Rankings!

NEWS: Josh Gordon returns to the field for Week 12.

SMITTY: Josh Gordon is officially reinstated from his suspension. Happy Josh Gordon Week, as we are constantly saying on our forums! While it’s possible he needs to get his feet wet before dropping fantasy WR1-type numbers, don’t think for a second this insane talent can’t drop 100 yards and a TD right out of the gate. Expecting that isn’t wise, but ruling something like that out is foolish. The guy was the No. 1 WR last year in fantasy and started that season suspended, so like I said, Happy Josh Gordon Week, everyone! Looking for Week 11 Power Rankings?
